Comprehensive Evaluation and Treatment for language and literacy delays in the areas of reading and writing. Children who experience speech sound delays as toddlers and into the school age years often experience additional difficulty learning to read and write when they reach school age. We are happy to help bridge this gap and will ensure your child receives a comprehensive treatment plan to help them reach their goals!
What do we treat?
Honeysuckle Speech Therapy takes a special clinical interest in the evaluation and treatment of both speech sound disorders and literacy (reading/writing) disorders. Children with speech sound disorders are far more likely to have difficulty learning to read, write and spell when they reach school age therefore we work to include early literacy into our treatment approaches for children with speech delay. For older children with difficulty reading, a speech language pathologist is uniquely qualified to participate in the evaluation and treatment of literacy disorders given our extensive training in the phonological and language based centers of the brain. According to the Simple View of Reading, "Word Recognition (decoding) x Language Comprehension = Reading Comprehension" . Reading is a complicated language task that involves both letter sound knowledge as well as extensive language and vocabulary knowledge to become a skilled reader. At Honeysuckle Speech Therapy, an ASHA certified speech language pathologist will complete a comprehensive evaluation and develop a customized treatment plan for your child. Parents are encourage to attend every session to promote carry over of skills from our office to home.
Why do we specialize in childhood speech and Literacy disorders?
Speech disorders are a unique and fun area of speech pathology, where differential diagnosis and individualized treatment plans are a must! We aim to provide customized care plans that are unique to your child, and your family. We often work on sounds that are important to your child, such as sounds in their name or names of family members. During each speech therapy session, we aim to make therapy fun while also providing structured and specific speech therapy intervention to meet your Child’s individual needs.
Reading is a life skill that opens doors to vocabulary growth, world knowledge, imagination, and more. For a struggling reader, reading can impact so many areas of their day to day life, and prevent proficient growth in other subjects in school. Speech Language Pathologists have extensive education and training in the area of language development, which is crucial to reading development. We have completed numerous continuing education courses in the area of reading development which are aligned with several different evidence based approaches in order to custom fit a treatment plan for your child.
Speech Language Pathologists have a very wide scope of practice across the lifespan including: infant/childhood feeding and swallowing, stuttering, speech disorders, language disorders, cognition, social communication, and voice therapy. By specializing in speech and literacy disorders this allows us to focus our continuing education efforts and build focused clinical expertise in this specific area of need allowing us to provide the highest quality care for your child.
